New Species Discovered in New Guinea
In a new report on LiveScience(1), Chris Austin, assistant curator of Herpetology at Louisiana State University, gives the behind the scenes story of a recent field expedition to one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth.
New Guinea, an island off the northeast coast of Australia, is so rich in biodiversity it has been named one of the world’s five High Biodiversity Wilderness Areas. Species there include kangaroos that live in trees, and lizards with green blood, such as the Green Tree Skink shown at right.
During his expedition, Chris’ team was able to identify 79 species of snakes, lizards, and frogs representing 40 genera from 11 families, including at least 10 species new to science.
